Case Number: NAF 2041740
Complainant: Markel Corporation
Represented by: Anna King, House Counsel
A well-established Richmond, Virginia-based insurance and financial company, Markel Corporation, has been found guilty of Reverse Domain Name Hijacking for attempting to steal the domain markelgroup.com from its current owner, a Naples, Florida company, to which the domain was originally registered in 2011. Markel Corporation was founded in 1930. The RDNH ruling was handed up a by a single-member panel of the National Arbitration Forum. Markel Corporation trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol MKL.
While the domain owner never filed a response, the lone panelist in the case, Alan L. Limbury, found Markel Corporation and its house counsel, Anna King, had acted in bad faith by repeatedly including, and asserting, association between the Florida firm and a malware group. Limbury cited Markel Corporation for using a document known to be erroneous, calling the company’s repeated use of the instrument, both in its original and amending filings, a clear abuse of the UDRP proceding.
Limbury issued his RDNH ruling on May 23, 2023.
